Brielle Batch, West Harrison, is one of 20 students to win a presidential scholarship to Indiana State University.
The scholarship, which requires a rigorous process of applications, interviews, panels and timed prompts, will cover full tuition, room and board, and ability to study abroad for free as part of a college career.
What sets Brielle apart from her peers is that she is graduating from an online school. Indiana Connections Academy is a public, tuition-free, online school that serves students K-12 statewide.
Six years at an online school has prepared Brielle for the college landscape, where more and more institutions are offering online classes. It also helps prepare Brielle for the work force as digital technology becomes more integrated.
Brielle accesses the school’s accredited curriculum through the comfort of her own home, but on Tuesday, June 6, she walked across the stage in-person with hundreds of her peers from throughout Indiana.

The Dearborn County Retired Teachers, United Community Bank, and the Betty McLaughlin Educator Grant/Award awarded South Dearborn Middle School teacher Randy Dennis two $500 grants to fund his A-Z Books of the Civil War.

Funding of this project would not have been possible without the support of the McLaughlin family.  They share a lifelong commitment to philanthropy because of the example set by former teacher and their mother Betty McLaughlin.

With the help of technology, students design their personal A-Z Civil War book online but then their work is printed in a full color book with the student’s picture and biography on the back cover.

Students choose their own entries of persons, places, and things in the American Civil War.  Once printed the book is theirs to keep for years to come.  Excitement about the project grows each year as in-coming eighth graders ask if they too can write a book.

Dennis has been an educator at South Dearborn Middle School for the last 15 years where he has taught U.S. history and geography to seventh and eighth graders.

One of the school’s instructional leaders, Dennis received his undergraduate education from Indiana University in Bloomington and his  master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of St. Mary.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dennis has coached or sponsored football, basketball, National Junior Honor Society, and the school’s academic team.

Dennis has previously been recognized by the Dearborn County Retired Teachers in 2010-11 for his Hands-on Interactive Social Studies lessons.

The Educator Grant-Award applications are available in January to any teacher in a public or parochial school in Dearborn County.

The retired teachers seek to encourage innovative and creative teaching in the classroom.

Karl Galey, superintendent of Lawrenceburg Community School Corporation, has been named 2018 Superintendent of the Year for District VIII by the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents.

Winners are selected by other superintendents in their district who consider the qualifications and accomplishments of area colleagues and their instructional leadership in a time of scarce resources.

Galey has been Lawrenceburg superintendent since 2009.

Lawrenceburg Community School Corp.’s graduation rate has increased from 76 percent in 2008 to an average of 95 percent since 2011. This district with just under 2,000 students has a certified early college high school, which allows students to graduate with an associate’s degree from Vincennes University at the same time they graduate from high school.

The district has instituted a one-to-one computing initiative with all elementary students receiving an iPad and all middle and high school students receiving a Chromebook.

Galey graduated from Northern Kentucky University and earned M.A. and Ed.S. degrees from Indiana State University. He is a past president of the Southeastern Indiana Superintendents Study Council and a member of the Dearborn County Chamber of Commerce, the Lawrenceburg Lions Club and the Dearborn County Juvenile Detention Center Advisory Board. He also serves on the Ivy Tech-Lawrenceburg Roundtable Committees for the advanced manufacturing and nursing programs.

One of the eight district winners will be named Indiana Superintendent of the Year for 2018 and will represent Indiana in the American Association of School Administrators National Superintendent of the Year program.

District VIII includes Bartholomew, Brown, Dearborn, Decatur, Clark, Floyd, Franklin, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley, Scott, Switzerland and Washington counties.
